As France gets ready to celebrate Bastille Day, the French National Day, it is important to evaluate the contribution of French Enterprises that operate as BOI companies to Sri Lanka’s National Economy. One such enterprise is Noyon Lanka Pvt.Ltd.
Noyon Lanka is a knitted lace manufacturer producing lace in the form of trims, bands, galloons and all-overs, which are supplied to some of the world’s largest lingerie brands such as Victoria’s Secret, Intimissimi, La Senza, Pink, Calvin Klein, Etam, Triumph and Amante.
Noyon Lanka commenced operations in 2004 as a Joint Venture between MAS Capital and Noyon Calais, in France which has a lace heritage of more than a century.
Noyon Lanka’s main manufacturing facility is based in the Biyagama Export Processing Zone which has capability for lace design, knitting, dyeing and finishing whilst providing employment to more than 650 employees. Due to the growing demand for Noyon lace, in 2018, a second knitting plant was established in Giriulla to expand the existing knitting capacity.
With 14 years of excellence in building and growing a profitable organization providing the finest quality lace, Noyon Lanka has also initiated many pursuits in order to maintain its triple bottom line: People, Planet and Profit.
Consequently, employee engagement has become paramount in Noyon Lanka where, the employees are the forefront in the day-to-day operational developments as well as the social and environmental initiatives of the organization.
For example, the team members and staff are formed into quality circles and encouraged to come up with Kaizen projects to improve their areas of work. These projects are evaluated semi-annually, and an award ceremony is held to reward the teams with the most successful projects.
In addition, the BOI company also has many employee welfare undertakings such as free transport, free uniforms and safety shoes, free meals for team members and staff, “mother’s meal” for pregnant mothers, medical center facilities, gym facilities for team members and library facilities, etc. to provide a desirable physical and mental working environment. Furthermore, annual trips as we ll as inter-departmental sports tournaments are organized to motivate the employees and promote a team working culture.
As part of its CSR initiatives, Noyon with the assistance of its employees carries out numerous programs each year, e.g. donating baby gifts for pregnant mothers, shramadana campaigns at identified Elders Homes and king coconut water donation to the Cancer Hospital in Maharagama to name a few, in order to give back to the community at large.
Additionally, flood donation campaigns, Adam’s Peak clean up, Sri Maha Bodhiya oil lamp cleaning and Kapruka Poojava are few of the initiatives taken up by the employees themselves to contribute to society.
With the BOI Company’s commitment to improve environmental sustainability, installing a 1 MW solar panel to generate renewable energy, initiating a 1:10 habitat restoration project by 2020, utilizing zero toxic chemicals, optimizing the operational processers to reduce the chemical and water consumption and reducing energy and water intensities by 75%, are a few of the many initiatives that have been put in place to contribute to a sustainable environment.
